To stem the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, regional nature conservation organizations are encouraging residents to join them in following the recommendation of the Cornell Cooperative Extension to stop activities that cause birds to gather. These activities include pausing all bird feeding and bath filling.
Life on the Edge
the best parts of nature are the things that change, the parts that keep you on your toes and create a spark of anticipation inside of you. When will I see the first green leaves of spring or hear the first cicadas of the summer? When will the first leaves start turning red, or the first snow flurry fall? These firsts are the most exciting parts of the year to me, and they always give me something to look forward to.
The Skunks of Spring
Because of their intense defense, it is understandable that skunks would have a reputation as aggressive or scary. However, they have a fairly calm nature. Skunks are not large. They are about the size of a house cat. They are solitary except when females are raising their young. And they are mostly crepuscular, with most of their activity around sunrise and sunset.
The Pulse of Nature
The sap run is a treasured and traditional element of the ecosystem. For those humans that make syrup or sugar from the maple sap, it is an activity that reconnects you annually to the rhythms of nature. Watching the snow melt and the days lengthen; listening to the chickadees start singing and then the bluebirds and finally the Tufted Titmouse, also known as the ‘sugarbird.’ These are signs that the trees are pushing their sap, long stored in roots beneath the frozen ground, into trunks as they prepare to convert it to the energy needed to create leaves.
The Joy of Floods
Floods transform the landscape and reinvent it, which is one of the reasons I love it so much. I love almost anything that takes the familiar and turns it into something new. This is the same reason I love hiking and biking at night or wandering outside after two feet of snow was dumped on the world. There is something magical in wandering through a familiar space that has been rendered unfamiliar by a sudden change.
Risks and Rewards
Everyone has different physical limitations rooted in age, disabilities, flexibility and strength, but it is important to find out where your limits are rather than just assuming you can’t do something. It’s about taking calculated risks and learning to trust what your individual body can do.
You have to learn what your body is capable of when you are young to create a foundation that helps you navigate the world later in life. There is no better place to face challenges and calculate risks than nature.
