Winter is usually thought of as a time with little color. Most trees are gray and naked; dead leaves are scattered below them. Grasses and herbaceous plants are brown and dry. The dark green of the evergreens and a few persistent berries bring some of the only color to the season. It is in this lack of color that one thing stands out, growing like green scales on the sides of tree trunks or exposed rocks. It is the humble lichen.
Winter, Time, and Rest
are halfway thought winter. February 3 marked the celestial half way point. But weather wise, it feels like winter has just started. The onset of big snowfalls and below freezing temperatures brings winter center stage. For many, this is a time to slow down and reflect. The pause at the end of the exhale, before inhaling again.
The Heart of Winter
There is a point in late winter, when the day length has increased from its winter low to that which strikes an internal chord in living creatures. It is a gentle shift from lethargy to alertness, an awareness that it is time. Time for what? That depends on who you are.

Free admission to the Nature Center for SNAP/EBT cardholders.
Free admission for all on Sundays
Grounds and Outdoor Exhibits:
Open daily, year round from dawn to dusk, free of charge
