Nature Calms
There is something about lakes that draws me like a magnet. Perhaps it is their sheer size. The gray water seems to loom overhead on the horizon even as the soft waves lap at the shore. The vastness of the lake makes any personal problems or troubles seem small by comparison.
Opossum Encounters
As humans have spread out, Virginia Opossums have found their way closer to centers of human activities.
An Audubon Wreath: The Ideal Holiday Gift or Decoration for Your Home
Monday, November 22, 2021 is the deadline to order a beautiful locally-made Frasier fir wreath that supports Audubon as well as local business.
You can choose either a plain wreath of fresh greens or a “Uniquely Audubon” wreath with a variety of sustainably harvested natural items including white pine cones, cedar, lavender, milkweed seed pods, grasses, and more. Information on the natural items used in this year’s Uniquely Audubon wreath will be included with your purchase.
Documenting Nature
Nature journaling is a common practice for those who appreciate the natural world and want to learn more. It is a common lesson in the environmenal education field to encourage attention, questioning and data collection.
The Magic of Seeds
Think about the remarkable purpose of plants — to spread seeds or spores to ensure the survival of their species. The little white fluffs of asters, the silky parachutes of milkweed; both rely on wind to take their seeds far and away. Queen Anne’s Lace, burdock, and tickseed hitch a ride on fur or clothing, hoping to land in a spot where next year’s plant can take root. Fern spores embark on a complicated journey, involving water and another spore, before they germinate into new ferns
