Jamestown, N.Y. – Celebrate Earth Day by giving back: Come to Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) for the Volunteer Day Team Challenge on Saturday, April 24.

ACNC is inviting teams of people and individuals to participate with staff and other volunteers to work on projects to maintain and improve the Nature Center building and grounds.

Families make great teams, as do groups of friends, clubs, and even local businesses. If you want to participate but do not have a team, sign up and Audubon will find a team for you.

After an 8:30 a.m. check-in, at 9 a.m. teams will select a specific work project.

The challenge will be for the teams to successfully complete their project. Work projects include pulling non-native plants, sprucing up the gardens, working on the outdoor turtle habitats, picking up trash as part of the Roadside Cleanup, and more.

Team slots are first come, first served, so arrive on time. After all the hard work, stick around and celebrate your accomplishments with lunch. This event happens rain or shine, so dress for the weather and bring work gloves if you have them.

The schedule for the day is:

  • 8:30 – 9 a.m.: Check in
  • 9 a.m.: Select work projects
  • 9:30 a.m. – noon: Work Projects
  • Noon – 1 p.m.: Lunch (COVID-19 style with lots of social distancing)

Face coverings are required for outdoor programs during which participants cannot maintain six feet of distance between family groups. Please have a face covering available.

Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are appreciated to help with planning. Call (716) 569-2345 during business hours or go to AudubonCNC.org and click through “Upcoming Programs.”

Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, N.Y., and Warren, Pa. While practicing safe social distancing measures, you can enjoy the six miles of trails on the 600-acre nature preserve from dawn to dusk daily.

The Nature Center building includes the Blue Heron Gift Shop, live animals, and the winning photographs from the 2020 Nature Photography Contest. Visitors are welcome Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is by donation only.
